The Government of Canada has a website which aims to inform potential migrants about the many aspects of living and working in Canada. The website is: www.goingtocanada.gc.ca.
This site is regularly updated and a good source for information about life in Canada. Under “Get to know Canada”, you will find general information on geographical, historical and political aspects of the country. Under “Move to Canada” and “Live in Canada” you will find information on more practical aspects such as costs of living, health care system or housing matters. On this website you will also find specific information on Canada’s Provinces and Territories. Moreover there are two important online tools for potential immigrants or temporary residents:
- The
Entry Requirements Tool
helps you to determine the requirements to enter Canada that apply to your specific situation, depending on whether you would like to immigrate to Canada, study or work temporarily in Canada, or visit Canada as a tourist. - The
Working in Canada Tool
is designed to inform you about Canada's labour market and help you search for employment facts by occupation and city, town or region. It is designed to help newcomers to Canada make well-informed decisions about where to live and work. After inputting a specific occupation and a location, an immigrant can produce a report that contains information on job descriptions, wages, skills, language training and job opportunities tailored to their needs. TheWorking in Canada Tool
can also be accessed directly at: workingincanada.gc.ca.
If you make a decision to move to Canada, you will need to think about visas. The types of visas and how to apply are all explained on the website of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada: www.cic.gc.ca. Broadly speaking, migrants have a choice between the relatively quick and easy temporary permit such as a temporary work or study permit or the more complex permanent residence permit. This site is also a good place to read the latest migration news or stories of newcomers to Canada. Under Live in Canada
you will also find useful information on the things you need to know Before you arrive
and After you arrive
which will help you prepare your move and get settled in Canada.
Other websites you might find useful are:
- www.credentials.gc.ca is the website of the Foreign Credentials Referral Office which provides information, path-finding and referral services to help foreign-trained workers succeed and put their skills to work in Canada more quickly;
- www.canadabusiness.ca is a government information service for businesses and start-up entrepreneurs in Canada;
- www.servicecanada.gc.ca is the website of Service Canada, which provides information on Canadian government services, also for newcomers;
- www.canada.gc.ca is the official website of the Government of Canada.
All websites are in English and French, Canada’s two official languages.
At Emigration Show 2009, a representative of the Canadian Immigration Section Berlin will be present to answer immigration-related questions and to give a presentation on Canada’s immigration program.
