- The Doctoral Programme in Arts (main subjects: English Language and Literature, Philosophy, Finnish Language, French Language and Literature, Gender Studies, Comparative Literature, Musicology, Nordic Ethnology, Nordic Folkloristics, Study of Religions, Russian Language and Literature, Swedish Language, German Language and Literature)
- The Doctoral Programme in Theology (main subjects: Exegetics, Church History, Practical Theology, Study of Religions, Systematic Theology)
- The Doctoral Programme in Historical Sciences (main subjects: General History, Nordic History, Art History)

In this recruitment we give priority to new or newly admitted doctoral researchers, who started their thesis project no more than two years ago (statement of previous funding is attached).
In addition, Åbo Akademi University invites applications for three doctoral researchers positions within the research profile https://www.abo.fi/en/solutions-for-health/. The link to research within the Solutions for Health profile should be clearly stated in the research plan, i.e. how the thesis can support preventive health care in different forms and among different age groups. The positions advertised within the research profile belong to the existing doctoral programmes at ÅAU. If you are applying for one of the positions within Solutions for health, it should be clearly mentioned in the application.
An employment as doctoral researcher may start September 1, 2024 or as per agreed. The doctoral position within the Finland Fellowship programme may start January 1, 2025, at the earliest.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
This announcement is open for those who have a Master's Degree AND a supervisor or a potential supervisor from Åbo Akademi University (who has agreed to supervise the applicant) within any of the subjects represented at the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology. Applicants must receive their Master's degree (or equivalent) on June 30th, 2024, at the latest (copy of degree certificate achieved after the application has closed should be sent to graduateschool@abo.fi.
An applicant, who is not yet accepted as a doctoral researcher at the Faculty, needs to fulfil the requirements for doctoral studies according to the principles for admission to the doctoral programmes within the faculty. You may start the application process after receiving notice of a possible funded position. When the employment commences, the doctoral researcher needs to be enrolled in the relevant doctoral programme.
The applicants are assessed on the basis of their study achievements, research plan, and possible results of previous research in the relevant field or related subjects. Previously received funding for doctoral studies will be considered when determining the final length of the employment (the received funding can amount to a total maximum of 48 months).
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Doctoral researchers employed by Åbo Akademi University should actively take part in the research and education within the faculty in Turku.
Åbo Akademi University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. The salary for a doctoral position will be based on levels 2-4 of the job demand level for teaching and researching staff in the salary system. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral researchers is approximately 2,580 € per month. The salary increases as the candidate makes progress towards a doctoral degree and the finalization of the studies.
Doctoral researchers will have total working time, which means 1,612 hours per academic year. The employment is full-time. The individual study plan for doctoral students will be evaluated annually.
A trial period applies to new employees.
