Are you interested in smart grids and looking for a new job opportunity in the field? Do you want to build an excellent science career and work at the interface of academy and industry? Are you enthusiastic about working with fascinating projects in the state-of-the-art research facilities? VTT might be just the place for you.
VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning, and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds focuses on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT's tech & infra.
We are now looking for a Research Scientist to join our Smart Grids team!
As a Research Scientist, your key goals are to develop, analyse and conduct expert laboratory work in the Smart Grids research platform. You will execute research projects with the research team, focusing on real-time simulations, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and data management all aimed at enhancing the capabilities and understanding of smart grid technologies. You will also develop testing platform infrastructure and implement different test setups.
The Smart Grids team is at the forefront of crafting innovative solutions for the future low-carbon energy system in which the electrical grid plays a central role. With a deep understanding of the power systems' current operations within the broader energy system, our team is expert in anticipating and adapting to its future transformations. These changes are driven by a confluence of global developments: a shifting energy mix, the accelerated electrification of transport and industry, the rise of cutting-edge digital technologies, and the growing demand for a more reliable and flexible electricity supply. Our team's expertise positions us uniquely to navigate these complexities, ensuring that our solutions not only meet today's needs but also pave the way for a sustainable and resilient energy future.
As a Research Scientist, you will:
Engage in innovative research. Participate in cutting-edge research projects within the smart grids domain, focusing on the development and application of novel technologies and methodologies. Your work will directly contribute to advancing our understanding and capabilities in smart grid technologies.
Conduct laboratory experiments. Perform laboratory work in the IntelligentEnergy laboratory, executing experiments that test and validate real-time simulation models, HIL systems, and data management strategies. Your efforts will be crucial in bridging theoretical research with practical applications.
Develop and optimize testing infrastructure. Design and refine the testing platform infrastructure to support a wide range of experimental setups. This includes building and implementing versatile testing environments that can simulate various smart grid scenarios and challenges.
Collaborate on research projects. Work closely with the research team to develop and execute projects.
Advance simulation and testing techniques. Innovate in the areas of real-time simulations and HIL testing, continuously seeking ways to improve accuracy, efficiency, and relevance of testing methods. Your work will help in fine-tuning our approaches to better replicate and understand complex grid behaviors.
Contribute to data management and analysis. Play a key role in the management and analysis of data collected from research activities. This includes developing strategies for data collection, storage, and analysis, utilizing your coding and software development skills to extract valuable insights from complex datasets.
Participate in knowledge sharing and dissemination through the publication of research findings, presentation at conferences, and participation in workshops. Your contributions will help in sharing knowledge gained from our research with peers, stakeholders, and the public, fostering a culture of openness and collaboration.
Your profile and experience:
You have practical experience in electrical work with S3 qualification (or willingness to obtain one) and a strong interest in working within a modern testing environment, developing testing setups, and conducting experiments with various types of HIL systems. Experience in laboratory facility development and planning is highly regarded.
You hold a Master of Science (Tech) degree in Electrical Engineering, or a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (University of Applied Sciences) with a research-oriented mind.
You possess good knowledge of power systems, with a particular emphasis on power system simulations. Your background includes experience or a keen interest in power system automation and communication protocols.
You have experience and/or interest in research topics such as integrating distributed and renewable energy resources, power system flexibility, power system reliability and resilience, electricity distribution systems, power quality data analytics, and AI applications.
You have experience in power system simulation tools such as RT-Lab, RSCAD, Simulink, PSCAD, PowerFactory and/or PSS/E.
Coding skills, alongside data analytics knowledge, are considered a plus. Preferred programming languages include Python, MATLAB, Julia, and/or Java.
You speak English fluently. Other languages, especially Finnish, are considered an asset.
You work well in a multicultural environment with other researchers and engineers.
As a person, we hope that you are:
Good team worker and have a positive attitude towards complex research challenges.
Fast learner and curious person, excited about learning and working with different projects related to the integration of energy resources in the future power systems.
Safety-minded person and comfortable working in a low voltage electrical laboratory environment, setting up hardware and performing research experiments.
Excited about producing high-level research.
What we offer you:
Visionary work in technology. We offer positions at the cutting-edge of technology and engineering from next-generation microelectronics and quantum technology to automation and robotics, energy systems and more.
